CTV News: PC’s to “restart campaign”
30 09 2007Did I just hear CTV News Ottawa correctly? The station is reporting that sources close to PC Leader John Tory say the rookie leader might be prepared to “restart his election campaign”.
I have no idea what that means but CTV News Ottawa reports that Tory will meet with his caucus and possibly adjust the party’s stance on funding for religious schooling.
Yikes. The PC’s are between a rock and a hard place. If Tory changes his tune you can bet the whole “Leadership Matters” ship will go down in a huge ball of fire. But sources are telling CTV News Ottawa that he might have no other choice.
Pretty hard to “re-stat” something when you only have 10 days till the election.
“I led my Party into a disaster of my own making, and now I shall lead them out! Leadership Matters.”

Wow. I don’t have the words to describe the monumental blunder that John Tory is about to make. The only thing that comes close might be his attack on Jean Chretien’s face in 1993. He has hinged his whole election on leadership and faith based schools. For him to back away from the schools issue now becuase the wind is blowing the other way displays such an utter lack of leadership that I can’t even begin to put into words my disappointment with him. I wasn’t going to vote for him, but before today I at least had respect for Mr. Tory for standing up for what he believed in. Now I see that it was all a cheap ploy to win the Jewish vote, and when he saw that it was going to cost him more votes in the rest of the province, he was more than happy to abandon the Jews to save his own skin. Absoloutely pathetic.
Wow. You spend an entire campaign focusing on “leadership” and “making tough decisions” and “doing what I think is right, not what’s popular” and boom! Ten days before the election you panic and change your mind.
I agree that Leadership Matters. And as much as Tory was leading the province in a direction the public didn’t want to go, it WAS leadership. As Dan points out, you had to at least respect Tory for following what I believe is a sincere belief on his part. However today, the message is “I really, really believe this is the right thing to do, but don’t worry, even if you elect me there’s NO WAY it’s going to happen.” It’s like he’s sabotaging his own central policy before the election even happens!
So suddenly, this has morphed from an issue of fundamental fairness to something not important enough to actually pass. It IS absolutely pathetic.
Let’s hope voters don’t bite.
