“Next Stop: Calian!”
26 04 2008OC Transpo’s manager of business development and partnership is advocating we hand over bus stops and transit stations to corporations. Well, the station names at least.
It’s one thing to give the thing a name like “Calian” (cough, cough) or “Nortel Station” or who knows what else but he isn’t doing a swell job of selling his idea in Saturday’s Ottawa Citizen nor is the Citizen helping him sell the idea.
The newspaper points out that if Patrick Curran had his way “the Terry Fox transit station could become, say, the Terry Matthews station — if the price is right and the name sits well with bus riders.” That won’t sit well.
But then this…
He pointed out that St. Laurent Shopping Centre, by virtue of its location on St. Laurent Boulevard, has a transit station bearing its name.
That’s a bit of a stretch. That’s like saying “Queensway Tours” has a transit station bearing its name.
I don’t think it’s a horrible idea but it could get carried away. So if we do go commercial I’ll be the first to buy bus stop 8308 which is at the corner of Anderson Rd and Innes Rd and name it “The Larry O’Brien Last Stop” bus stop.
You know, just because.

I wouldn’t mind stopping at “Hooters.”
Actually Hooters closed all of their downtown Ottawa locations. I think they still have one open in the west end — in other words, pack a pillow because at the speed of our transit system you’re going to be on the bus a while before you hear them call out “Hooters” (and then of course the French pronunciation of it).
